Looking for a new run around after the Astra packed in. Just want something cheap (Sub 2k), diesel, that will do around 50mpg and 12 months MOT.
Obviously all the usual stuff is coming up (Astra's, Mondeo's, Vectra's, Focus's etc) but would you be put off by anything over 100k miles? You can get some pretty decent cars if you're willing to take up something with around 120-140k on the clock. I notice a lot of them are being sold with over 200k, which gives you hope that you know it will last, but obviously, you dont know the amount of money people have put in to get it that far
Probably only looking to keep the car a few years at most and will do around 15k a year max. Reckon its worth looking at stuff in the mid 100s? Or play it (theoretically) safe and go sub 100k and get something a bit poorer in terms of spec and quality?

My mates just bought an E46 BMW 330d with 136k miles for £1900 and looking at it and the inside it hides the miles very well. It sounds great to.

Aye, I've been to look at a few with fairly high mileage and you'd never even know to look at them. 20 years ago anything with 100k on would've been falling to bits but cars are much better built these days.
Basic scenerio is, i go low milage, i end up with something like an older shape Focus 1.8 diesel, or basic spec Mondeo. Go for something a bit high mileage and theres a few high spec ones, newer shape Focus's, Alfa 147 JTD's. Also quite look of the MG ZT CDTi's. Bit grandad i know

I'll clock 160,000 soon in my Jag-clutch went at 135,000 and the rear near side wheel bearing is on its way out but apart from that, I've had no issues at all. I service it once a year, max so 20-25k between services. Returns between 45 and 55mpg depending on driving conditions

as others say on here, it's not so much the engine thats the worry, it's everything else that's had to to that mileage also.
the diesel engine may well be good for 200k, but the basic car and suspension will be the same as on the petrol models.

My mondeo is on 190k now,
It it's entire life it's had two front springs an dampers,
A inlet hose,
Obviously brake friction parts ad tyres,
But before I had it it did mainly motorway miles,
It's only since I've been beating it about town and back roads it may need new bushes and ball joints, though I have done 30k in it,

True Ben, true. This is why im looking for something that ha 12 Months MOT, as that should mean suspension parts should be in good enough nick to not break the second i pull off the forecourt

I'm not sure I'd have a Mondeo after the amount of injectors we sell at work!
2.0 tdi vag stuff suffers from cracked heads over 100k
I'd probably buy a Merc C250 CDI

Whats its mpg like mate? Book figures state around high 40s and they are usually a bit optimistic, only thing thats putting me off getting ones really. Like the idea of cruise control!

On a long run I get 55-60mpg +
Around town they aren't so good 35-45mpg
Injectors die because the pump is dying,
People change the injectors an wonder why it happens again, when they forget the pumps the cause of the problem, but chances are if it hasn't happened by 100k it's not going too.

wouldnt touch a 2.0 TDI VAG diesel engine (PD) at any mileage - i have put far to much stuff right, usually costly, on so so so many cars..
1.9 Vag Common rail stuff is generally bullet proof however

Cylinder head issues, including cracking causing mixing of coolant and oil.
Also the ovaling of injector holes leading to poor running
Injector failure
Tandem pump failure resulting in fuel and oil mixing
Turbo failure
Flywheel failure
Inlet manifold flap failure - causing the fuse to pop for the flap and cooling fan activation
EGR problems
Glow plug problems
DPF differential pressure sensor failure
Oil pump drive failure - in both chain and gear drive versions
theres probably more

we had the first diesel corsa b sold in the uk, a 1.5td, it used to get 60+mpg general driving, more on a long run. simple to service capable of big milages so long as serviced regular. its still in the area goning strong. if you dont mined older cars then these are great as are ford escorts, focus, fiesta, peugot 106, 205, 306, vauxhall astras, cavaliers mid 90's cars.

My last few cars have all been high mileage diesels, my Astra had 170k on it and it still went well, engine never let it down once but other components such as suspension, wheel bearings, water hoses etc were all past it and it was constantly being repaired.
My current 306 has 150k, again all the issues have been mechanical related, engine has been 100%.
Last week I just bought a E46 330d with 140k and so far its been faultless, had it all checked underneath etc and its great, as long its been well maintained over the years theres no reason why it wouldn't another 140k. On short runs it drinks diesel like a bitch but on the longer runs it's great, comfort is nice too

I've had one of these but in a corsa d since 2009. Awesome little car, cheap as chips (mines a van).

All i've needed in 30k are tyres, diesel, tax and a wash.
