Yay or nay?

I have always known to double space after a full stop, but some mates in uni think its all wrong and it should just be one space. I can't find anything of worthy source to say one way or the other.

I was under the impression that it was only 1 space.

Double space. I've always been taught.

Edit: Although some people are saying it's not needed in all circumstances.

Was taught double space in terms of lining (for essays/marked material) but not double space after a period/full stop, seems a little odd to me.

Edit - So it was a formatting issue with typewriters, hence the double space.

Anybody who's writing something that people might actually read won't have done a word processing exam.

Why? What reason is there to double space after a period now that we use computers that format spacing correctly?

Never heard of it. Though that Wikipedia link says that the font handles it so I'll just carry on doing as I do. You'll notice that the double spaces you've lovingly added to your posts on here all get ignored by your web browser too.
