Fee destroyed these two boxes in the space of a couple of months in 2012 (TA at KH and TOTB).
Both have suffered the exact same fate - stripped 3rd gear.
Some pics - for no other reason that I like stuff like this
remnants of box1, much more drained with oil
Remnants of box 2 - bigger bits
box 1 internals, 3rd gear damaged
box 2 - 3rd gear pretty much all gone
gearsets side by side

Ooof. I'll be the one to sound stupid then, but what actually causes this?
I guess launches would knacker 1st/2nd, so is it aggressive downshifting or just struggling with the raw power running through the box?

Did she decide she hadn't done a good enough job on the 1st box so went all out on the 2nd?

Why third? Normally it's the top gear (or top 2 of they're both overdrive gears) which suffer with torque stripping them.
Is this a typical Skyline problem?

that was with a clutch....
1st one was on slicks, full boost, power out of the hairpin at KH and up into 3rd.... BANG, no drive. I think its just the power and grip is too much for the OE box and rips the teeth off. Something to do with the centre plate flexing too.
2nd box was the first full boost drag run at TOTB. She did a low boost 60ft at 1.6 fine. Same story, 2nd to 3rd... BANG

Robin, aye, its a weak known issue with the gearbox when used at around 700bhp
We have a little less but better 4wd system with uprated transfer box, so i think less slip in the drivtrain took its toll

We are now running a 6sp sequential dog box, but with helical gears (not straight)
