Bit of an update...
Had an engine fitted
It's a 1.9TDI 1Z engine from an Audi A4, 90bhp I think. Had the gearbox completely overhauled, it had all new ring and pinion, syncros, taller 3rd and a VERY tall 4th (really would recommend BEARS Motorsport in Birmingham - the guy was telling me you couldn't get a longer/bigger 4th in the box if you tried!). Not sure as no rev counter yet but to my finely tuned diesel ear - been driving them for years! - it seems to be doing about 2.5k at 60. Pulls up hills like a steam train (was leaving my Dad's Prius behind on the hills on the A30 home!), it's an absolute pleasure to drive for a 1971 vehicle!
Radiator is mounted under the van with a scoop to encourage air flow and protect it from rouge stones!
Engine had a new cambelt, waterpump and ofcourse all new fluids and looks very clean Few touches of welding here and there and it went in for it's first MOT for about 8 years and passed , meaning this happened (HELLO FREE TAX DISC):
Business end:
(Need a bumper to cover that now ) - Ignore the odd lights, need to get a nice pair of shiney chrome ones!
All of the electronics went into the wheel well, ECU and everything else needed, covered up:
Couple my mate took on his phone:
Needless to say it was BLOODY noisey on the way home with nothing but half a dash, a steering wheel and two front seats! Like nearly unbareable but we made it in the end. Over the moon with it now

What made you go for the Tdi over the more powerful 1.9d like Jim has in his Corrado??

Eh? That makes no sense mate
It cost enough, but, less than a Subaru engine'd conversion would have cost. I wasn't up for doing the work myself as I work too hard!

It's fucking rapid for what it is, I'm sure as it's now decatted it's a little more than 90bhp - pulls like a steam train
Out ran Dad's Prius on the way home, missus is sure it's quicker than her fiesta

Didn't realise you we're putting a water cooled engine in it takes away half the fun!
Love the colour though and looking forward to seeing the furniture go in! You making it yourself?

Yeah... I don't think I could take the unreliability of the air cooled engine. Plus it's hopefully doing double the mpg!
I've designed it, I've done some work for a carpentry firm who are going to make them for me!

Maybe, it'll be a custom map down the line if I do, not going for massive power

Looks cool Pow! Like the fact you are updating an older car with a more modern engine! Very cool.
So shut load of dynamat and weather proof open cell foam in the doors/floor then

Good idea tbh.
Any reason why you couldn't use the gearbox the engine originally came with?

Would have thought it'd be a right pain to sort the gear linkage out
