When I was in my flat / apartment I used to spend per month...
£30 water
£58 combined gas and electric
That was me on my own, out 8 - 6 Monday to Friday.
Never really turned anything off to save power other than lights but being a middle flat it required very little heating in the five years I was there.

Sky - £33
Council tax - £125
Insurance - £14
Life insurance - £10

£1000 in joint house account each month covers all my bills.
Gas and electric is across 12 months less in summer more in winter but monthly cost covers it!

This is the figure I had in mind for when I move out, excluding food, so that's good to know although our mortgage is likely to be higher due to potential 5 - 10% desposit (Nationwide Save to Buy scheme).
Do people really only spend £120 per month on food?
I can spend nearly £40 of a weekend buying bits and pieces at the girlfriends which would only do a couple of meals

we spent around £80 a week on food/toiletries, wouldn't like to go any less than that.
£1850 covers all our outgoings per month (minus petrol), more than 50% of which goes on the mortgage.

You could easily do 120 a month on food if you planned and bought smart. You could also easily spend 4x that.

I was about to say outgoings like that concern me as mine and the Mrs joint income is about £30k gross, so approx £2800 take home per month. But if that includes car insurance, phones etc it isn't too bad. We'd have £500 - £1000 disposable every month.

30k gross doesn't equal £2800 a month deano. or do you mean 30k net?
oh, by the way, make sure you transfer money from separate accounts into the joint account, keeping your own salary going into your own account.
my wages used to get paid straight into the joint account and obviously the joint account had loads of money in, yet my separate account didn't. decided to change it and now i put in a certain amount each week, and in turn i'm left with a lot more disposable income because we aren't wasting it on crap.

£2800 take home per month is probably optimistic, but I did the maths wrong. Our joint is £40k I earn £22k plus bonuses, she's on £18,500 but cause of my student loan and pension our take home is about the same.

you'll be fine. i earn around that and have approx £1000 left each month to do what i want with, assuming you'll have a similar mortgage of around £1000.

Probably less.
The weird thing is I struggle to save my target £500+ per month as my outgoings can vary so much. And unfortunately Lilys parents are skint and in housekeeping and food Lily spends as much as she would if we lived on our own so cannot save.
We'll get there one day.

you should be able to get water/electric/gas easily under £100.
my gas bill has dropped from £43.00 to £33.00, my water bill has dropped from £25.00 to £20.00 and my electric bill has stayed at £57.00 (although i assume that'll be coming down too). used to be £39.00
not too bad really, although we both work full time so the heating/electric bits are rarely on during the day.

Yup I spend roughly £120 on food per month, from joint account.
I do however buy dinners at work from my own money, her mam works in a butchers so we get cheap or often free meat (biggest spend I suppose for most)

how do joint accounts work? is there any benefit over one of us opening another account? when we get loan payments we want to put 4 months worth of rent and bills each in a separate account to cover everything

Try aldi out.not everything is good but some stuff is and its cheap as. We go and stock up on tinned tomatos, passata, kidney beans etc every now and again.
In regards to joint accounts we have 1 which all the bousehold bills etc are linked to. We then put the same amount in each a month roughly. That way each of us have our own spending money seperate. Thats worked for us as we have always earnt similiar. Think we are going to start putting it I 1 pot and taking a bit out each month so we save more as currently dont save.

We spend £275/month between the two of us on food and toiletries.
Eating is expensive tbh.

Your dinner money should be included imho. I take a packed lunch to work so would have to include that. If you have a full dinner at work do you only have a snack of an evening?

I spend maybe couple quid a day on a sarnie / pasta. That money is not coming from joint account so shouldn't be counted. If I go out for a meal / take away that's same it's a extra you don't need to have so don't count it or take from joint account.
Missus takes bait with her sarnie / fruit etc which is all bought from weekly shop!
£30 roughly a week and don't eat shit or value stuff. Must just buy carefully.

its still a meal though so needs adding. If you took a month off work, you'd be spending that money on the weekly shop.
