...driving around in 4 different automatic cars, been on the road today helping out with my godmother and her husbands business getting stuff shifted and taking him to the airport.

Driven a C200 CDI, a Combo CDTI Easytronic, a CRV 2.4 iVTEC and Dad's Prius. And the best one to drive is the Prius. It might be a horrible place to sit but it's by far the quickest and the best for acceloration to about 85. Why are auto gearboxes soo bad?

They're not.

The Merc one shouldn't be, particularly.

The Combo one is a manual with actuators like SMG but shit.

The honda one will be crap as honda outsource.

Auto's are for lazy people / retards who don't care how it feels Dave, as long as they're going A to B with ease.

I've had an bmw auto, didn't have any problems, if anything it was just sluggish at responding. Worst auto i've driven was an astra, it was absolutely horrific, drove it like a spaz.

Around town autos own tbh

It was having driven several BMW autos that made me get one. Went out in the Porsche at weekend, that's auto, OMG it's wicked, the kickdown was insane. Borrowed an auto L200 on Sunday and that drove great too Putting it simply, any auto experience I've had has been good.

Ford Mustang I had in the US had a horrific auto box. It had no idea what I wanted the car to do, and I had no idea what the car was going to do

Really? It revs it's tits off in 1st when there's no need to, you put your foot down and it bollocks about shifting into 2nd, by far the worst bit is slowing to a near-stop, put your foot down to go again and it's still stuck in fucking 3rd or 4th, so it starts to pull away sluggishly onto the roundabout and then it throws it into 2nd and rams you forward

Dad's 530i M Sport Auto was pretty good.

Audi A6 2.0TDi Le Mans I drove at work was pretty good. Didn't use the steering wheel buttons mind.

I'd have an auto if I was a rep doing 30k+ a year.

You need to know how to drive an auto. Driven loads and I don't find any shit or jerky.

Autos are always better in bigger cruiser cars etc.

Been driving a 1.4 Auto Ford Fusion Titanium for the past week as it goes. 27mpg FTL!

I don't mind an auto. Doesn't work on small engined cars though. I wouldn't own an auto unless it was something special though.

I know how to drive an auto, locking it into gears and stuff but I still find the Prius the best gearbox to drive, the CVT wins IMO.

I'd like to have a good go with a Audi DSG box though!

Prius is easy to drive

My W124 is lovely. Like butter. Smooth, swift and quiet. Good kickdown too.

In my experience though, FWD cars with small engines and auto boxes can be pretty disgusting.

My mate had a c200 cdi coupe and it was shite. Kicked down to many gears when going for an overtake, hit over 4.5k revs where it wasnt going anywhere then would have to change up again (which took an age), then the power would come back in. Abit scary when you on the wrong side of the road

Nissan Navara auto was good. Really suited the vehicle.

I nearly traded my megane f1 for a 3.2 TT DSG until I drove one .

Hated it. Fine when cruising about in auto mode, but when going for it, it never knew what gear it wanted to be in. You would be in the power and it would change down to many gears then go up, then go down did my nut in. It was ok in 'flappy paddle' but pretty boring and not that smooth.

This was an 05 car so I expect the technology to be a lot better now - I just haven't experienced it.

The later 'mk2' dsg equipped cars (mk5 golf etc) are infinitely better.

I don't think I'd have a manual one over a dsg one, its that good. Works well with the 2.0 tdi too.

I had a brand new BMW 730d auto and a brand new X5 40d auto for a week or 2 a few months back and they were awesome to drive. I loved the auto boxes. Made driving a manual feel a bit crap to be fair!
