Me mate is going to look at one this week and I was wondering what he should be looking out for? I am going to go with him so any known faults for this generation of car?

From when I had my 330 I would check the following
Rust on arches / tailgate
Expansion tank
Split Inlet pipes
MAF sensor
Why is he looking at 318 its a crappy 4 cylinder!!

Insurance etc.....going to use it to do 20k a year or so...

I've got a 318, it's 2.0 and no more than £500 a year to insure, cheap to run too.

As said subframes crack, expansion tanks, PCV's leak, rust, rings, stem seals.
Rather a 20d everyday of the week, blank the swirl flaps, little economy map and your sorted.

Yes more common on 328 and above due to the extra torque, my 328ci did it to me
Also look out for
Expansion tank
Water pump (squealing is a sign its leaking onto one of the belts)
Worn wishbone bushes (have to change front lower arms if these are gone) - will produce a knocking nose when pulling away
