As per my project thread, trying to remove some black dye applied previously to re-dye it a different colour.

So far i'e tried renovo canvas cleaner, fast glass and even vinegar! The fast glass and vinegar seem to work but it's taking ages to even remove a little bit.

This is 4 or 5 washes, all scrubbed using a bristle brush:

Any ideas? I'm guessing acidic stuff is best, seeing as the vinegar and fast glass worked.

would white spirit not work or brake cleaner

or any other paint thinner / stripper

if applied with a cloth?

Raw Autosmart G101 will strip anything. I sprayed it on leather about 1/3 and it did some serious damage. Took ages to get the spray pattern off

Did you apply proofer over it when you recoloured it? If so you have sealed it in pretty well!

I would go down the route of trying either neat APC like G101 or failing that spirit - either white spirit or Tardis. Will stink like hell and need to be rinsed out lots.

Alternatively you haven't got a lot to loose in just cracking on with the recolour now - may just require a few coats. It's not really designed to be removed once applied so is never going to be easy to remove

Never proofed it rich. Just applied loads of coats of black

Will give white spirit a try tomorrow and report back. As long as most of it comes off, i'll be able to re-apply the dye.

my dads company produce dye's that can dye any colour even if its darker

Got some white spirit and gave it a try. Worked a lot better, although still took almost 2 hours of constant scrubbing to get back to this stage:

Hoping I can now apply the dye instead of having to do more scrubbing.

Ben, I think I've said this before, but I'm 99% sure that it'll never come out well with red dye on a dark grey roof.

Especially seeing as the base is patchy, this'll show through the dye.

It's only patchy as i'm not finished. Just gave up for the day.

The actual roof is green in colour, due to 10 years of sun damage I guess, which is why I dyed it in the first place.

I'm going to go and try a small test patch at the top first and will report back. Luckily don't need the car for work this week.

Remember the colour will likely fade within the first week or so, like it probably did with the black as well, but more badly.

Just went out and put some on. Crapped myself when it came out the bottle purple, but when applied it turned a nice deep red. Seems to cover the darker areas aswell, which is good news.
