Decided I want to get a bike, not for commuting or anything, just messing about on, jumping off stuff, going through forests etc as a form of exercise.
The last bike I had was a £100 halfords own brand dirt jump bike about 8 years ago that took a hell of a beating (me going down stairs, off jumps etc) and never broke so looking for something of a similar style. Don't want to spend too much as I can't see it getting used that much plus the missus doesn't want me to get one anyway 
So with that in mind I've found these

So with that all in mind, what should I get Will the cheaper mountain bikes be ok considering what I want to do or should I pay extra and get one of the hard tails ? Or are there any other alternatives I haven't considered ?

That budget and what you want to do don't really go hand in hand, imo. You'd be better off looking for something 2nd hand if you only want to spend a small amount..

As above. Not even going to comment on the bikes posted there. Spent 5 years working in a bike shop fixing crap like that. Yours will have been a 1 off. Trust me it will end up costing you more in the long run

As Liam & Jacko said really.
If you don't want something you can sit and pedal, i.e. a true dirt jump/play bike, look out for a Specialized P2 on eBay or something like that.

Have you done any jump type riding before? Can't help but think that buying a jump specific bike will make it even more likely that it won't get used much. Spend as much as you can afford on a normal mountain bike either rigid or hardtail (Front suspension) would be the best way forward

Simon, that's kinda what I was asking. I used to batter around in skate parks and through forests where I used to live and as I didn't break, that's why I'm looking for similar.
Now I'm not likely to be going to skate parks anymore but while out I wouldnt want to feel restrained.
However if a mountain bike would be up for the challenge then I'd probably get one. What models etc should I be looking for ? As I haven't riden since I started driving I have no idea what's ok for the price

You can do jumps on anything technically and most of the time it's the skill of a rider that lands a jump rather than the type of bike. If you think you will be pissing around over short distances then maybe a jump bike will be fine, but if you intend to use it for a little more general riding you will probably prefer something more conventional. If you are looking second hand it's hard to point to anything specific but something like a Specialized Hardrock may be a good start. There are various versions / years each with better spec components etc but have a look on ebay at what they are going for.
