Right I sold the VRS to try and save some money on fuel and bought a 2002 MK4 Astra 1.8 SRI which I've had problems with so when it's fixed it's going. Now I'm bored and were selling the Qashqai and the wife's getting another convertible so we need another family car that I'm using daily for work (10 mile) and weekends with the 2 1/2 year old.
Max budget is 4k ideally though 3.5k
Criteria...
Diesel if poss but if the MPG isn't horrific then petrol, quick, 5 door, look smart, not cost to much to fix if it breaks.
Can't seem to find anything that would keep me amused for longer than 5 minutes

Wouldn't get a decent VRS for that money Ben that was my 1st choice as I really like the them.
330d? Another top choice but would cost £££ to fix.
Fabia? Had one, loved it so definitely worth considering.
Been told to the Ford tdci's are quite unreliable?! Clutch and flywheels but also injector/fueling issues that can be hard to trace.

Just clicked over 191k in my tdci, original clutch, flywheel, diesel pump and injectors.
People have injector problems, change the injectors and don't realise they have a dodgy pump which is killing the injectors, new pump and injectors and flush the pipes solves it.

Doesn't break down often though. Servicing is not cheapest (6.5l of 0w30 Castrol edge) but filters are cheap as chips from Eurocarparts.
AS long as swirl flaps have been taken out it is going to be fine.
Auto gearboxes can lose reverse gear (5hp19) gearbox but second hand ones are about £250-£300
