For reference I live in a newbuild, so up to date wiring (should be anyway).
To finish the cloakroom off I want to replace the single gang plastic switch with a nice metal one I've bought. The light is linked to a fan which will come on when the light comes on and goes off when light is off (it has its own isolated up near the ceiling)
I got the faceplate off yesterday and compared the backs and the metal one has its own earthing point, which I haven't been supplied a wire for. The metal box (anchored in the wall) has an earthing point and has the green/yellow wire screwed to it.
Do I use this wire to attach to my faceplate or do i need to buy some wire? My main concern is there doesnt appear to be a huge amount of space in the box, and when I come to do the 3-gang in the kitchen I'm a bit concerned it isnt all going to fit in

It'll fit when you screw it back, you're only putting an earth in

You can just strip some wire from some twin and earth cable and take a length from the backbox earthpoint to the faceplate earth point. Cover the wire with some green/yellow earth sleaving

If you have no spare cable, remove the earth from metal back box and terminate it on the new metal faceplate, far more important that the faceplate is earthed than the backbox.

Am I right in thinking then that because the faceplate is earthed, and that is connected (metal screws) to the backplate, everything is still earthed?
Is it safe to remove that earth and reuse it? Last thing I want it someone ending up crispy from going to the bog

Screws may be covered in crap and not conduct. Slim chance like but you never know

But you don't touch the metal back box when turning on the light switch.. Just make sure the earth cable is attached to the faceplate.

No, just cheap lamps more than likely.
