Has anyone on here got one of the Mk1? Going to see one at the weekend and wondering if there is anything to look out for or anything I need to check has been done? Also what are they like?
Hopefully driving one wont send me xaos crazy though

Check the wishbone bushes, common that they fail and should be replaced with Ibiza Cupra solid bushes.
Pretty solid cars, just check for any knocking/vibration that could point to the flywheel on its way out

One thing I read about when I was looking at them was to check the carpets in the rear as they do suffer from leaky seals on the rear doors.
briskoda is worth checking out, fair bit of useful info on there

If the advert has a photo of it flying over a bridge, I'd give it a miss.

This is an easy fix if they are, good bartering point though.
I really liked mine, I'm a bit out of the loop with them now though, can't remember much.
TT brakes and RARB were 2 of the best mods I've done to a car.

As said, console bushes on the wishbones tend to go. Check the door seals but an easy fix, make sure the orange cel is on when the ignition key is in position 2 so no faults are hiding under some tape (more common than actually fixing the issue)! Excessive black smoke means its either mapped or the turbo pipe seals are shot (again common). Look for a decent skoda service history too as the wrong spec oil will damage the engine.

I wouldn't worry too much about this, think the oil would have to be really wrong to cause any problems, despite what the internet says. Definitely doesn't have to be the fancy VW spec. Obviously preferable if someone has bothered going to the trouble of the correct stuff.

Yeah, I agree, it won't wreck the engine at all but it does cause premature failing of turbo oil seals on the pd engines if constantly using the wrong spec oil.

I remember all that oil hoohaa when I had a PD130 Ibiza. People were terrified of taking their car to a run of the mill MOT garage for a service or whatever because of it.

Cheers for the info, might spill my drink on the rear carpets to save some money

Don't you fancy an Ibiza fr, same engine and IMO nicer!
And yeah they need special pd oil and it's not cheap I pay around 40 quid for 5 litres from seat

I drove John's and loved it.
Weirdly I like the interior and think it's one of the best points of the car whereas 99% of other people think it's shite and looks dated

Fantastic cars, especially when remapped.
People do not believe how fast they are, but they shift when remapped.
But then they also like to throw every fucking sensor up over a few months, for fun!

I love the interior! It is just what you need and where you need it, no fuss.
Problems have been mentioned:
Console Bushes
Leaky rear doors.
Also check for shuddering on idle. Could be as simple as a new dogbone mount, or a DMF, or like mine NO IDEA.

They aren't super fast but I always found mine fun to drive. It's a small car and it has the typical 1.9 PD lump of torque so always feels quicker than it is (good thing imo unless you want to race someone).
I definitely liked it better than my Ibiza FR, just a better put together and comfier car.

Went to see it on sunday and the clocks read 113k when advertised as 73k
He said he had had to change the clocks as they broke but fuck that. If he had mentioned that in the advert i may have been less worried about it.
Going to test a Ibiza FR and another Fabia on saturday

VW and TPS usually have oil on offer at about £25
Check the cambelt has been done every 4 years or 75k too
