The time has come to look for a new car, my budget is around the £7k mark (finance) but have a part ex and £2-2.5k part payment.

Never had anything on finance before, but want it over 12months to get the payments out the way.

Very indecisive at the best of times so even harder now.

I like the look of:

leon tdi Btcc
Fiesta mk7 tdci zetec s
320d coupe e90 (but maintenance costs and high milers put me off)

Or get something totally different, mk5 golf tdi on air etc etc

Don't be put off by high mileage bmws, aslong as there's full service history it should be fine. Also maintainance isn't bad from independent specialists, mine needs a service every 15k or two years. Think I only paid £130 for an inspection 1 which is cheap

Don't get a BMW, you'll end up driving like a twat. Personally I'd go for the Leon.

Bmws are usually very reliable engines if looked after. Dads has just hit 170k and goes like new

I think it was the 3.0D M57 engine in them that had issues with chains.

THe E90 has swirl flaps. They break up and go into the block.

Pretty sure the 320d engine had a problem with the timing chain also.

Look into a loan aswell. Finance option they offer may work out a lot more.

How is it? You're going to buy a car and a mk5 golf is not something totally different in the slightest.

Monaro, vxr8, caterham etc. Thats different.

You can get air ride for the fiesta.

Yes n47 engines pre 2009 are very at risk

Even new ones are failing but less common

Having said that I did nearly 80k in my 1 series and onto70k in my e90 with no issues

Sainsburys were doing a 4.9% apr on loans between £7.5k-£15k. Not bad, and you'll probably not get a finance rate any lower.

As Tom said, see if you can get a credit card with a long 0% purchase period. You just need to be disciplined with it; you could also make the purchase on one card and then transfer it onto another. Barclaycard are doing 26 months interest free on balance transfers. There's a 3.9% charge for making the transfer (4% initially, then they refund you 0.1% for some reason) though. Car finance on a few £k is going to be expensive and as Ben G pointed out you're only going to get the decent rates above £7.5k on bank loans.

The other option is to take a bank loan out for £7.5k to get the decent interest rate and then make overpayments. You might run into problems doing that though as you'll need to overpay so much!

Done some more research on this, saved some more and sold some bits. 5k is all that's needed now.

Tesco is 7% on 5k, works out at £5,187 which I'm happy about and £432 a month over 12.

Insurance group is 32!! But only another £180 over my group 5 astra dti daily.

On a mission now to find a 57plate around 40k mile 320d msport coupe in my budget

Leon FR TDI here (135,000 miles drives like new), having also driven a K1 (BTCC) I would recommend one for sure, especially over the other two you're looking at.

I bet my house that a Leon with 135k on the clock does not drive like new.

Are you sure your calculations are correct? 1% of 5k is 50 quid, so 7% will be 350 quid, not.187.

Still not too bad though.

Agreed. Not a chance in hell it'll drive like new unless every single component has been replaced.

12 x 432 is 5184 also.
