Guys, I've just done a service on a friends newly acquired 1L 12v. 96 thou on the clock. I was surprised how quiet the chain was. Changed the oil, of which was very low and very black. Now the chain is pretty noisy. Why would that be?

Are you sure it's the chain and not the tappets? As they could of been quite due to the thicker old oil.
What oil did you use?

new oil will have cleaned the chains and tensioner of all the old dirty sticky oil. at 96k they are due changing anyway.

Wouldn't do anything abnormal.
These engines normally pretty good with noisey chains but 100k is the interval for changing. Most people don't as far as I know.

It's the tensioner on the chain that causes it to tap, using thinner oil than what was in before will have made it noisier. Like everyone has said they are due to be changed every 100k
