After stripping some wallpaper in the living room I saw that the chimney breast has been patched up. I'm told that some Victorian terrace houses had drying ovens above the fireplace and it could have been that.
I've tried Googling it but can not finding anything. Has anyone heard of these?

Might also be a repair from a previous fire.

it was quite fashionable to put a little alcove above fireplaces at one point. Looks like that.
