I know this is a corsa forum but there seems to more car knowledge on here than most so thought I'd ask the question here

I'm after a new car for the missus and am considering a 2005-2008 Audi A4 tdi s-line 2.0 Avant.

I've got at most £8k to spend and ideally would like a low mileage one. There are huge variances in price from £5.5-8k depending on spec and mileage.

I was looking at ones with sub 70k miles but these are bordering on needing a cambelt if they haven't already.

Cambelt replacement aside, are there any horror stories with these cars? MAFs, turbos etc? Will a higher mileage one be OK as long as it's been serviced regularly?

Also, should I avoid quattro ones or is this irrelevant in terms of on-going costs and maintenance?

Quattros are boss. Love my S3 when it snows ha!Haldex service is every 40k or so and thats about £120 so nothing much more unless you mean the economy side of things.

Dont think i could buy an audi without the quattro 4wd system. its great when the winter comes.

Agree with the above, had 3 'Quattro' cars it's great when the weather is bad.

Servicing costs next to nothing for it.

Not sure if the A4 uses a Haldex?

Mates had loads of A4's and never had any issues with them and they have all been high milers.

I'm looking for an A4 at the moment and I'm steering clear of the B7 and trying to get an earlier B6 model with the 1.9 TDI engine, it's a much more reliable engine although quite unrefined compared to newer diesels.

The 2.0 TDI engine has some pretty major problems. I had an A3 with the 2.0 TDI engine and I loved it but the cylinder head cracked at 30,000 miles! My Dad also had the same problem but his was the 140 version in a Golf. This is a common problem as well.

I wouldn't have another if it was outside of warranty, luckily mine had a warranty.

A4 is proper Quattro, not Haldex like on the A3

as stated the 2.0 tdi has major issues on the 140 - mostly cracked heads and injectors

each have there own opinion but the 170 is no where as smooth as the 140 to drive

although nosier try and get a 1.9TDI in the sline shape - plenty where about in 2006 model

So ideally go for a 1.9tdi over the 2.0 due to potential engine issues on the 2.0?

2.0tdi is a better performer but has more issues

You could be lucky a get a good one

Most will have high miles as they will be ex company vehicles but maintained to a high standard

A lot of guys at work reckon the shape you are looking at are better built then the current model as they have run both

Reliability wise yes but it will be noisey, unrefined and a bit slow compared to the 2.0 TDI so depends what you are after

I was in the dilemma 3 years ago. Did my home work as I wanted a nice smooth motor that wasn't going to give me head aches for the money.
If you looking at buying a B7 then my advice is to stay well away from the 2.0 diesel. Yes it's pulls better and quieter but not reliable.
I chose to go for the 1.9 diesel. And I can say it's been fantastic. Never missed a beat. Been everywhere across Europe in it. No problems at all.
Don't get me wrong... You could buy a 2.0 and have no issues at all. But 3 years ago I was spending 12k and didn't want the 2.0 horror stories in the back of my head.

dad has had 2 a4's now and brother has had an a3

1.9 and 2 2.0tdis

no major issues with either

all of them got to around 100k and over before they moved on

I've always liked the 1.9tdi engines but wouldn't be spending 8k on one.

3-4 max but after that it's too old an engine.

Missus TT was awesome in the snow last year; we were concerned having move from a Disco3 to a TT Quattro (225) but when the weather hit, it didn't skip a beat. I've got photos of it with snow drifts higher than the car and no road to be seen and it really was great even on rubber bands for tyres. I'd hazard at either your haldex malfunctioning, being disconnected or terrible tyres.

I'm really keen on an A5 3.0TDi Quattro black edition as a replacement when my jag finally dies.

MattB warned me away from the 2.0 diesel when I was asking about A5s.
