It fails its emissions. If you take it along to an MOT station, they'll do an emmision test for you for a bit of dosh.

Maybe the ECU is doing strange things and causing the smell

YES!
My cat (I'm pretty sure it's my cat) is rattling and groaning like an old bitch with a metal walking stick! It doesn't do it under acceleration. I've only noticed it when I take my foot off the accelerator to slow down. It's giving me the shiits! I'm going to check out some high-flows this week.
Do you'se think it's the cat decintergrating inside? It's not the heat shield above the cat, I've checked that already.
I've heard about a GSi having a problem, where the cat was stuffed, and the exhaust was coming back from the cat, disturbing the EGR. I've been having probs with my EGR for a while! Hopefully a new cat will eliminate 2 things at once.
Thanks dudes

The eggy smell does not mean the CAT is failing. Its just a bi-product of the nasty gases being converted to inert compounds. If your CAT is failing, it will rattle when changing gears and when your revs are at high idle, this is what i found in my experience. Run the engine to 2k RPM and listen for a rattle, if you hear it, your CAT needs replacing.
