I found one of my mums old school books, she was learning Pitman Shorthand in the 60's. I had no idea of what shorthand really was, I thought it was just abbreviated or shortened sentences. I was shocked at how much it was in fact a totally alien fucking language!

It may as well have been classed as an actual language as it has no bearing on any kind of Romanized english in any way, shape or form!

Can anyone, or does anyone, still use shorthand anymore?

I understood shorthand to be just very abbreviated words such as "w/" for "with" and such like. The above looks arabic!

She says no, she can't remember a jot of it.

Strangely, my Grandad was a Wireless Operator in the Lancasters in the war, and right up until before he died, he could still translate morse code like lightning if you could find him some, it was still broadcast on SW on the radio up until about 10 years ago.

My mother learned it and taught me some when I was a child but I had no use for it so forgot, my sister knew it too as she was going into journalism but never followed that career.

My mum used to use this when working as a secretary, dictating a letter is a lot easier this way, if you understand it

My mum uses it at work when she takes minutes for meetings. She studied it for 6 months and got some kind of certification.

Old woman (50's) at my work can do shorthand, it's mental, like another language!
