Hi guys,

My first post here so be nice!.

I'm looking to buy my first car!. I havent passed my test yet but have my theory in a week and can hopefully get some hours done in it before my test.

My problem is this:

I have a friend of mine selling a 2005 corsa. it is only a 1 litre but I don't mind as insurance will be cheap and its in almost immaculate condition inside and out. it has had 3 owners and I'm told 5 M.O.T,s with 71,000 miles but tax and mot are both due in February this year. the only problem with it is the full beam lights don't come on (maybe just the bulbs?)

he's selling it for £950

the other option is a:

1.4 2002 corsa with tax and mot due next December. in good condition with the odd age related mark but it has 104,000 miles on the clock

this is being sold for £795


my question is, with tax, mot and possibly 2 new bulbs being bought is the first one a better option than the other and what are the pros and cons of each?

Bulbs will cost you no more than a fiver. Although, it's a bumper off and back on with the Corsa C.

I would go with the 1.0, 12v engine is pretty decent for a 1.0. and just sounds overall a much better first car from what you have written unless you plan to do a lot of motorway miles.

Thanks for the replies guys. is the bulb replacement an expensive job as I don't want to do it myself.

No i should only be doing 60-70 miles a day on the A roads

Bulbs are nothing of a job. Could be coincidence that both have blown, or could be a fuse. Either way both simple jobs.

Id get the 1.0 for insurance reasons alone...

Switch could be broken for headlights

cheers for the reply buddy!. I was told that high beam is needed for the M.O.T? and since its due in February I thought id get it fixed just didn't know what the problem could be

71k miles maybe, but it'd put me off if an owner can't even be bothered to replace the bulbs tbh

Have you actually checked insurance prices too? Not always as cheap as you'd expect

he's told me theyve only just gone and as he's selling it within the next few weeks hes given me £50 off to do them yeah I've checked I get £1150-£1300 on the 1.0 and £1300-£1600+ on the 1.4 so not too bad either way as I want to buy monthly

Not sure on your age but that's not bad at all for a new driver, my young cousin was paying a fortune, as are other new drivers who pop up on here.

I'm 19 and I too was surprised. I've tried corsas, clios and puntos all around £1000-£1700 on the high end. i live in a fairly good area. however saxos and peugeot 106's were A LOT higher

It can be done without taking the bumper off , I done it on the mrs old corsa c sxi (55 plate) Took me about half an hour mind you , there's not much space at all.

I'd get the 1.0 because of insurance and because it is chain driven.

If you go for the 1.4, make sure the cambelt has been done. Pre-facelifts were belt. Post were chain.

I fitted hids on my c without taking the bumper off lol
