Would prefer to be nearer the £2k, never had a diesel before so any suggestions welcome?
Would just be a daily hack if commute increases, so doesn't have to be anything special, just something cheap to run and comfortable.

Thought about the Clio as they are super cheap to run. But reliability puts me off a bit.
Not thought of a vectra, will have a look.

For the amount of kit as standard, longevity, comfort, economy, ease of maintenance, I'd recommend an X Type. I've had my 2.0D SE for 3.5 years now; clocked 175,000 miles-it has almost every conceivable extra bar sat Nav and is significantly better specced than the equivalent Merc, BMW or Audi and bar a few maintenance parts; I've had no issues in 80k miles. You just have to get past the grandad looks but the way I see it, you can't see the outside when you're behind the wheel.

an x-type is based on the mondeo about 20% of it anyway.. they are not bad cars though

You'll pick a mk1 up for that budget; I paid £3.5k, 3.5 years ago with 95k and fjsh on a 54 plate. Way more reliable than my A3 and perfect for commutes and motorways. Only flaw with mine is no folding rear seats but they seem to be on every other one I've ever seen. Full electric seats, automatic lights, heated windscreen ( no more scraping), full leather, ewm, climate control, rain sensitive wipers, cruise control, phone connectivity, 45-50mpg normal driving - 50-55mpg motorways.
Even after doing 175k, my leather seats haven't sagged and you'd have a hard time telling it had done that mileage without seeing the clocks which given that I barely ever wash it, wax it or give it any attention is a credit to the build IMO.

Fabia VRS is top of the want list but would be a high miler for the budget. And I could do with something that I'm not tempted to play about with.
Vectras are pretty decent for the money, will look at x types.

as long as it's well maintained you should be fine, one thing with the PD engines though is it must have been regularly serviced with the correct oil, otherwise you delve into the path I experienced with the cam going

I have a Clio DCi 106 at the moment. Gave £3k for it on an 07 plate a year ago. Great car! The 86 is the one to have though. Cheaper tax and better to drive.

I wouldn't go near anything with that shocking 1.4/1.6 HDI engine, Ford, Mini and Vovlo included.
