Hi,
Got a remotely location that needs a good dose of Internet, anyone had experienced with 3G routers? I don't want anything too expensive but don't want a piece of crap. Needs to have a external antenna for the 3G as the signal inside the building is proper shite.
Also who does the best 3G only deals ?

For an industrial situation? At work we use westermo and eWon for 3g / ADSL modems. Can use external aerials. Can't remember any model numbers tho.

Any chance they have a Draytek in place currently? Can just bung a 3G dongle in the newer ones. External aerial might be a bit of an issue.

Draytek doesn't take an external antenna for 3g,
also on the pricey side
also needs a 3g usb modem
I want something like this, but cheaper

I've got one of these and never had any problems with it. Plug in dongle and you have wifi through 3g

Look at Solwise or Huawei (970 springs to mind); they do a handful of 3G routers that aren't particularly expensive. Also worth keeping an eye out on eBay, i've seen Cisco 800 series with 3G modules go for around the £100 mark.
Alternatively, you could grab a 3G dongle with an external antenna (some dongles like the E160X have a SMA connector onboard, just need to cut a hole in the casing) and then attach it to a decent router.

Looks like the RUT500 is where to go, just need some suggestions on 3G providers. Don't really want to get in the contract business either.

3 321 sim is pay&go 1p per mb. << That's probably the worst looking sentence I've ever written.

Got a Huawei access point affair in the workshop, load of shit, drops the connection for fun.
Bought a regular USB dongle on O2 today and that seems slightly better, still not what you'd call stable but at least it has a go and degrades gracefully instead of redirecting to you to the 'Welcome to EE' page like that other shit thing.
No external ant though. Although it was only 12 quid with a free gig. Then £10/Gb in future. Although that sounds a lot now you mention it

I use 3 and I can't fault them, near 4G speeds in some places.

Knew it was too good to last, that dongle isn't the best inside the garage, and no external ant.
So I'm in a similar position. Need to either find a new device for that SIM, or something else entirely.
Out of interest - the stuff on this page -

Do they just use regular SIMs or you need to do anything special?

Price wise i got a brand new vigor 2830 for £130.00 off eBay.
I have in the past when trying to setup a second line on the cheap (sales people selling shite) setup a 3G dongle on a vigor 2820.

Reg sim, I've just agreed to buy one off this chap on ebay, said he'll take an offer for £100+postage

Just need to pop in a sim card and see what the standard reception is like, then purchase a proper antenna to mount on the fence. Signal strength according to my Nexus 4 is so much better outside the building.

Three does look good for data only pans, currently got a Orange and GiffGaff PAYG sim on my desk, so going to try and use one of them before committing more monies to a rolling contract with the likes of Three.

I might be being a bit of a spaz here but does this take a regular sim card?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-TP-Link-TL-MR3420-3G-4G-Wireless-N-Router-/191009086687?pt=UK_Computing_Wireless_Routers&hash=item2c79075cdf#ht_2376wt_977
seems good for the price if it does as ill put the sim from my EE mifi in it

I think they just route the dongle.
So if the dongle is shit, that will be.
