Car has gone into Lookers to have the front bumper repaired and painted
I asked for the full bumper to be painted but when I went to collect it its total gash.
anyone in the business tell me if you were doing a full front bumper would you remove it or leave it on the car to paint it?

Correct way, remove bumper, strip all parts that you can so it can be prepped and painted properly on a stand, refitted
If it's proper shit and dry to the touch/orange peels, sounds like they have had a smart repairer come in and just do the damaged section and masked up the rest of the car/other bumper parts while it's still on the car

There not getting paid to remove old paint?
What the fuck do they expect to do with the paint on the bumper? Just fucking spray ontop of it?
Leave it there and refuse to take it back untill it's up to your standards.

I'd never use a dealer to get my car painted (unless it's an insurance repair).
Bit of a shitter, but hopefully they can rectify it.

That's what happens. You paint over old paint. Don't remove it all. Especially on an insurance you. You get paid to paint the bumper. Not strip paint off and paint it.
As said sounds like it's had a shit smart repair.

No but you do remove some of it don't you. Not like you just leave the old paint alone and paint over it.

It's your choice where the car is repaired. You don't have to go to one of the insurance body shops regardless of what they say

Indeed you would remove some, depending what the repair was. Say if it was a scratch on the passenger side of bumper. It would get sanded and feathered out untill smooth. Rest of the bumper would just be scotched and painted over.
