I loved our Disco 3, I still miss our Disco 3 but I'd find it difficult to ever recommend owning one out of warranty. Our's was the 2.7TDV6 HSE loaded with options and it was fantastic except for the undiagnosable gearbox/remapping issue. I'd have another but wait for the 3.0SDV6 Disco 4 to come down in price.

So in short, get the Volvo as it'll be cheaper to run.

How often do you get snow? My missus parents manage fine in Scotland with a fwd qashqai.

Now the boat reason thats much better. I'd go with the disco.

What's the towing capacity of the XC90 though? D3 is 3,500kg braked and it's comfortable pulling at full load. What is the combined boat and trailer weight? Bearing in mind a decent braked, rollercoaster 10 boat trailer is 750-825kg.

i think the d5 xc90 is 2100kg braked the towing thing is the main thing as we gone for a bigger boat this year its a 21ft fletcher with a chevy inboard so not a light boat

Go for the D3 then but buy from a dealer with some form of mechanical warranty on it.

Gearbox oil cooler failure and torque convertor issues with the 2.7TDV6 is the main one-lots of info on Disco3.co.uk. As I said before, I loved mine and I miss it but when 2 LR dealerships, 2 LR independent specialists and a gearbox specialist can't tell you what's wrong with your car, you lose a bit of faith. Nothing else caused us any issues, we did blank off the EGR valves which gave slightly improved economy and it was bloody comfortable and versatile-did a 1700mile round trip to the alps in doing everything from motorway to town to mountain pass to snow in it and it didn't miss a beat.

We also use one for work for towing boats and although we've now got the latest SDV6, it's perfect for it. A Landcruiser amazon would probably be a better workhorse but for turning up at a client's base or driving to Geneva which is had to do last summer, it was spot on.

Rav4. Cos I got one innit...

Seriously though, a lot of car for the money. £10k will get you one from about 2008 onwards, which came with modern dash, basic toys, and an epic tow vehicle. Its also long enough to sleep in the back Being a Toyota, it goes on and on and on too. I think the 2.2 TD has about 150bhp, plenty torques.

Rav4 tow capacity won't be sufficient for towing the fletcher.

Really?

Toyota RAV4 2.2 D-4D
2008
1660kg Kerbweight
Towing capacity 2000kg/4409lbs

That said, it says my 2.0 Petrol will pull the same weight. Its not torquey at all, but its got 155bhp/134lb ft so once moving its ok. Not like you want to race from standstill anyway, so not 100% trusting of figures.

Toe capacity of the D3 is 3,500kg braked. The boat and trailer combo once it's fuelled and carrying kit, I would hazard at being 3,000kg being that a reasonable braked boat trailer will weight 750kg. 2,000kg capacity won't be nearly enough.

That's fair enough, I don't think my bike/trailer is quite as heavy I think you worked on boats didn't you so will know a fair bit more than me Didn't realise it would be that heavy total weight.

Parents friend used to run a 21ft outboard V6 boat on a twin axel from an old 4x4 (talking mid/late 80's here) thing OK, just never realised they weighed so much.

No chance I'd be towing a 21ft boat with a 1.6t car.

Volvo towing weight isn't very good, only 200kg better than an XC60 which is an all round nicer car.

21ft will also have about 3ft of lead on the trailer hitch so more like 24ft overall.
