So I sold my B in September 2013 and in the months since I've been cycling to work and using the misses' D for when the weather's bad. She now needs the car every day so as of next week I'll be cycling come rain, thunder, hail, snow or sun.
So, my itch for a new car is growing again. Car will only be used for the odd commute and at weekends. Below is a list of what I'm after:
Reliable
< £1500
0-60 < 9s as a rough guide
Petrol preferably
Doesn't have to be practical, the D car can be used for long journeys
At a guess I'll do under 2,000 miles a year so fuel costs aren't a huge concern
Can't be silly money for insurance
So far I've been mainly looking at MR2s and MX5s.
What are people's suggestions?

Struggle to find a decent one for the price. They tend to be £1500 upwards. I can always save up more, but I know I'll get impatient before I can afford more than £1500 and insurance.

I am not buying a glorified Rover.

You say that but the chassis was developed along with the honda civic, meaning plenty of modifying parts available.
Also good 2.5 V6 engines and about as quick as a 172/mr2

Already been looking at them as mentioned in my first post. Care to elaborate as to why you think an MX5?

Say what you like, it's not going to convince me to buy one lol. I'm really not a fan of any of the Rover MGs in the slightest.

944 would need work at £1500 though.
MX5 is what I'd be looking at that kind of budget

Pretty much fulfils every one of your requirements, great to drive, cheap enough to run etc etc.

Thought you might wade in trying that one

Not a fan of tan leather...
But that aside, I've been finding most MX5s seem to suffer from arch rust. Finding a good one for the money will be possible but could take a little while.
It's been easier to find a good MR2 for the money but there do seem to be a lot more MX5s on the market.

Did have a quick look at BMWs. Won't rule them out, but they're a bit big for what I need really.

The slight lack of straight line speed with be made up with the grin that is on your face when you drive to work on a crisp summers morning with the roof down and your sunnies on and the fact you don't have to slow down for a corner. Ever.

MX5. 1.6 is more revvy but 1.8 slightly more powerful. Don't get a 90bhp 1.6, make sure it's a 115
