Seems like it could start to turn even nastier. Ex President making speeches proclaiming he won't give up without a fight, pro Russian militia/Russian navy occupying airports and government sites, reports of Russian military helicopters entering Ukraine.

One question i do have is where is the Ukrainian armed forces? and who are they answering to at the moment? Surely if they're in the pro-European camp they're not going to stand by while Russian forces occupy their country!

Of course the other factor is that very little is going to happen and our media are blowing it all out of proportion to make it sound like the start of WW3

What are everyone's thoughts on this?

Ukraine doesn't have much oil, the majority of Russian natural gas that supplies a lot of Europe passes through it though.

Heard some reports that officials are handing out Russian passports in Crimea. The Russian foreign policy states military action in order to protect it's citizens, the same thing they used in order to annex Georgia in 2008....

its not that bad and besides theyre armed to the teeth..

we couldnt go because they could march troops over the border. We would have to fly troops over. Russia would have a super advantage of having all their men n gear already over there. Also messing with them would be ww3..fuck dat

Upper Russian parliament have allowed Putin military action in the past few minutes, opposition are saying as many as 6000 extra troops already in Ukraine :/ as hammer has just said

This is really something we shouldn't get involved in imo, poking sticks at half rate Middle eastern countries is one thing but Russia is far too powerful to get drawn into a conflict with IMO TBH IIRC QFT

Obama making statements about there being costs for military action is also the height of hypocrisy

I love the way Putin conducts himself but they aren't too far away from North Korea on the mental scale.

The way Putin was 'elected' is all you need to know about the mental scale. He pretty much just demanded the job

A treaty signed in 1994 by the US and Britain could pull both countries into a war to protect Ukraine if President Putin's troops cross into the country.
Bill Clinton, John Major, Boris Yeltsin and Leonid Kuchma – the then-rulers of the USA, UK, Russia and Ukraine - agreed to the The Budapest Memorandum as part of the denuclearization of former Soviet republics after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Technically it means that if Russia has invaded Ukraine then it would be difficult for the US and Britain to avoid going to war.

what pisses me off is that everyone seems to ignore what is going in Eastern Ukraine, where the nation is against the new "government". Crimea is Autonomous Republic, which was "given away" to Ukraine in 1954 by Russia.

What has happened in Kiev, was well planned, not my amateurs, and definitely well supported financially.

I agree. As long as the US keeps their nose out, we won't get involved.

I was reading before that the Budapest Memorandum isn't necessarily legally binding so we wouldn't necessarily be rushing to their defence.

It's not our place to be defending Ukraine and David Cameron shouldn't be entertaining the idea IMO. The simple fact is that a good portion of the country wants to be associated with Russia and should probably be allowed to. If it splits the country then fine.
