Having an intermittent starting issue on my missus' TT Quattro 1.8T [225]. It happens pretty much every day in that you turn the key and it turns over but doesn't catch, turn the ignition off and try again and it catches on the first turn of the starter motor. It does this pretty much every day now without fail but always starts first turn on the second attempt.
Audi Macclesfield couldn't find anything at all wrong, local specialist found a faulty ignition coil solenoid (iirc) which they replaced but it still has this issue. One suggestion was AFM/MAF but it was just someone's hunch and seeing as we're getting good fuel economy and there are no issues on the diagnostics, I don't want to spend money on something which might not be the cause.
It isn't getting worse and we can live with it but I'd rather not if someone has an idea - any ideas?

So the crank is quick enough and healthy?
How long are you leaving before ending the first attempt?
Was thinking something fuel pressure as you've nothing present at the injectors for a little while until you run the pump for a bit.
See what happens if you stay on the key longer, and also if you get ig lights so the pump primes but don't crank, then crank and see if anything changes.
Air flow sensors wouldn't normally prevent it starting.
Crank and cam would, but that wouldn't always fix itself on the second attempt.
Also - what if it is running and turn off then straight back on - or is this fault only when you come back to it after leaving it?

I've kept it cranking for a minute before on and off gas. As soon as you release the key and go for a second start, it fires fine.
This is also from cold (left overnight or all day at work) or hot (after a motorway run at petrol stations).
I've not tried turning off and straight back on - the quickest is as above, 4 hours on the motorway then off for 5/10 mins at the pumps.
Local specialist has asked us to keep a diary of when it happens but its so sporadic as to not point in any sort of direction.

Oh, that's always turning the ignition to 'I' first until all dash lights are on before ignition.

So that kind of rules out fuel pressure if you crank for a while and it still doesn't start on the first one.
Almost sounds immobiliser-ish although I don't normally like blaming that as its a bit of a catch-all.
Be curious to see what happens if you leave it off for 10 seconds and then try. Hopefully not the same symptoms!

Funnily enough, and you've just reminded me, she did have two new keys about 2 months ago; they were mashed so Audi replaced the button section of the key and circuit board etc. but not the physical key section - that could point to immobiliser issues.

Could be a relay, have had to replace two on my corrado now. Both caused weird faults that you could live with but got annoying.
One was a restart issue, that was a fuel pump relay.

I'd hazard a guess at immobilizer - isn't there a common issue with the dash clocks on these (that's where the immobiliser lives?)

First thing I was going to say was immobiliser/ignition barrel issue.
My manager had an identical spec TT which would throw up all sorts of issues including radio not working, cd changer not working and a whole host of random gremlins.
Trip to Audi and it was found to be a dodgey ignition barrell or something.
When I had Toad alarm on my Corsa, if I didn't unlock properly it'd turn over, just not start etc.

I wouldn't be too sold on an immobiliser issue. First up, if you try and start the car with a key that's not matched to the immobiliser then it logs a fault in the dash panel insert, along the lines of 'key not authorised' same goes for if it's an issue between the dash and engine ecu you would get an 'engine control unit disabled' fault logged. On top of that as you crank you'd get a yellow warning light with a key and car shape on it and the normal fault gong.
If it's a sporadic fault it won't be simple to track down, you'd need the car to be faulting while you test it. My first port of call would be getting an oscilloscope on the engine speed sensor to see what that's up to, along with checking its feed from the engine ecu. Saying that they normally log a fault too. It would be interesting to see of the engine ecu is supplying a decent 5v to the sensors both at the control unit and at the sensors, if it's not it could be a simple as a dodgy earth.

Mine used to do similar thing, wouldn't start on first turn after been left overnight etc or while at work (10 hours). I noticed it was very intermittent and seemed to do it worse when car was also low on fuel
one day i got in and the key turned all the way around. I got new barrel and seems to have sorted it out,,I hope... mind you has only been couple of weeks..
