Saw one today forsale. Paint work is mint and could see all arches were completely solid and under sealed. Absolutely mint, and apparently an ex film car. Owner wasn't there, was wondering how much they're worth really.

It's a cabriolet edition, looks to have all original
Stickers on etc. Only thing changed is the wheels

Drive it and you'll have no further interest in it Sir.

Those stickers look aftermarket too btw.

Never really liked the look of them.

The mk2 gti on the other hand has to be the big bumper model tho.

I like them but I don't think I could use a 30 year old car as my daily. Would have to be something I used over the summer months and dry stored in a garage.

Why turn everything into a story about your useless life? No one gives a shit if you'd use one for a daily or not, the question was asking if anyone knows anything about them.

With the roof up, it feels as though the front of the car is connected to the back with Blu-Tack.

With the roof down, the car drives as though it were manufactured from damp cardboard.

They are astonishingly bad. I always quite liked them until I drove a few and then i've been baffled ever since as to how something that awful could actually reach the production phase AND make sales after people had road tested one.

They have VERY heavy steering too and are slow and bumpy.

I think the specific car/model is more important than the chronology here Andrew.

I wouldn't own and drive a Golf Convertible if it was brand new, yet being 30 years old wouldn't bother me for daily use, as long as it was the right car.

My daily driver is 25 years old, so not far off that anyway and proof that i'm not just talking out of the back of my head.

Just to clarify, my observations and comments weren't based from a taste standpoint.

If I were to be biased, i'd have to say that I think they're actually quite a good looking car (in the same way I like the Samba etc) and that red cabrio looks like a nice clean example too.

They just happen to be interesting looking, yet sadly, pretty unpleasant vehicles to drive. Much like a Samba or a Morris Minor, but for different reasons.

Give it a road test if you're able to do so, preferably with the roof down. You'll know within about forty feet.

The first one I ever drove really shocked me and after I got over the initial shock, I was falling about laughing with a colleague at how bad it was, as he'd just driven it for the first time too.

Saab convertibles are similarly atrocious btw.
