MAS - had same problem on my old GSi, was running a k&n filter and it had broke one filament in the sensor, try unplugging it, you'll get a fault light on dash but see if it clears.

No compression or low compression?

Because if its leaky it still might ignite up the rev range. I wouldn't say no problems up there, just that you can't distinguish them from a normal high idle. I would hazard a guess its down on power in total.

Are you doubting his diagnosis? Might be worth re-running the tests and seeing what comes up. But if you have poor compression then there is your problem right there - HG, valve seats or piston rings. All of which is consistent with where you're up to changing things.
