I can only guess the car was scrap.

They don't tend to get scrapped though, hence my bafflement.
They don't rust and are eminently and endlessly repairable.
190s aren't as roomy as the W124 E Class, so the non sporty models are sometimes not as desirable, but they are handsome, comfy, solid, reliable little cars and come from the same chassis family.
Seems a bizarre choice of car to abuse in this way.

Having been the passenger through the early 1990's and subsequent owner of a W202 rust issues aside, the latter was FAR superior.
W124 is not really comparable IMO! 190 to me will always be a hateful car. Maybe the example I was carted around in was an exception, but my god did the tech improve in a very short period of time.
Speaking of which, there was a fith gear ep where they trashed a W124 estate

Yeah, I saw that Jam. Hateful, wasteful 5th gear bastards.
In my experience the 190 is more reliable than the C Class. I'm tall though so have never particularly enjoyed driving either as they are both too cramped for my frame.
W124 though. I bloody love them. Short of a Silver Shadow, best comfy cruiser ever.
Edit: That said, I think i'd be willing to put up with slightly cramped quarters for an Evo II 190
