Off to Venice on Monday.
Who's been before?
Anything we should/should not do/visit etc?
Have already done some research but wondered if anyone has been and would highly recommend any places or similarly steer us clear of others?
Our hotel is literally next door to St Marks Square.
The Mrs likes Art, I like Architecture.
We will not be taking a gondola ride.

Why would you pick somewhere famous for being particularly wet if you don't like boats?

The swimming pool I use is wet, doesn't mean I use a dinghy to cross it!
You don't just use gondalas to get around. She is alright on bigger boats or passenger ferry's just nothing that small.

Get ready to spend a lot of cash on mediocre food and drink.
It's a cool place, make sure you take a trip out to Murano island to see the glass blowing etc as its famous in the area.

You've just described an average trip to an Italian restaurant
Here you go sir: A bucket of carbs with some bland tasting meat that has been through a blender so not only does it have very little flavour it now also has the texture of baby food.. Enjoy!

Apparently not.
All the reviews I have seen for this time of year say it isn't, it is only usually smelly during high tide in Summer. No idea why.

Worst "I'm going on a holiday that the misses organised and I'm going to regret for eternity" post, EVER!

Highly doubtful, especially since the hotel was a gift from work

We went this year whilst touring Italy, a day was enough for us.
There are some nice areas of the town, but it is a big tourist trap. Lots of tacky generic shops and restaurants. We are considering Italy again, but Venice wouldn't be on a repeat visit list (same with Pisa) - it's too samey, and once you've seen lots of boats and a lot of people and cramped walkways theough the streets, you've seen it all really.
You have to walk or use the water taxi/bus to get anywhere too, you can only get a car to a small loop at the end of the causeway. The loop is as far as you will get using car/train anyway. You'll definitely need to use one of the boats to get to your Hotel if you don't fancy walking quite some distance...
Personally, you have also gone to the wrong place for Art & Architecture - you should have done Florence for that.

Unfortunately work didn't give me a hotel stay for that
Your views seem to contradict most of the reviews I have seen, although some did say that you either love it, or don't.
We know we are going to have to get a boat, which she will be fine with, we are taking the service from the airport to St Marks square.
Booked a music performance as well in one of the theatres Should be a laugh.
