This was news to me so I thought I'd share it on here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-32481382
Your paper counterpart driving license wont be needed anymore after 8th June. You'll need to obtain a code from the DVLA website if you're planning on hiring a car abroad after then as endorsements are stored electronically only. The code lasts for 72hrs, after then you'll need to get a new one (you can also get on by phone).

Does my head in having to look after it just for the purpose of car rentals, though it's only been UK rentals in the past few years in which I've been asked for it.

If you go abroad and rent a vehicle, you need a 72hr code to allow you to rent that replaces what used to be paper counter part.

I'll bet insurance companies will start asking for this Code too.. It will stop people from hiding the fact they have points on their license.

That's probably one of the reasons for doing this - there must be a lot of fraud going on at the moment because it's quite easy to leave endorsements and convictions undisclosed.

Surely it would be easier just to put the driving license number into the DVLA website for a points history check. Thats what happens here.

Using some kind of expiring code/hash/number is more secure than using the number on the license. You need a few bits of information to login and get the code (NI number, license number and some address details), so it stops people from being able to get at your details with just one piece of information.

It also means the query doesn't have to be against the ENTIRE DVLA license database, just against a much smaller dataset that can be purged every 72 hours.

72hr expiry is a bit shite though. Say you don't hire a car 5 days into your holiday or something. Need to find WiFi, remember to take your NI number with you etc etc.
Other than that, great idea. I have to hire cars at work for business mileage and it is a right pain in the arse having to dig out my paper licence. That and I can't hire one at last minute.
Dad still has his OLD paper licence and no photo counterpart

It does say in the article (and I did mention) that you can phone up for the code for that exact scenario

It's standard issue computer security - It's just how you do things like this if you're planning on doing a proper job.

Not sure why there's so many stories on about potential problems for people hiring cars abroad because some companies don't know about the change. Just take your counterpart, if they know no better, then they'll accept it as they normally would.
