My mates been offered one of these on an 06 plate and asked me if they come with any serious faults. I have no clue but I know a lot of you on here have had/own one and wouldn't mind your thoughts.

yes, the engine is a complete piss take.

the 2.5 lump (in STI form) is a ticking timebomb if anything much more than standard, common ringland failures on them.

if left alone and maintained then reliable like any other engine.

I think that's only with the STI engines, WRX ones are a bit safer.

I'm also not convinced that modifying blows them up, I think the STI ones are timebombs even if standard judging by the number of warranty claims on the hatches

Look after them and they will look after you. I put 40k miles on a boxer STI lump without issue.

Oil & filter every 3k miles is good practice and generally done by most enthusiasts.

A bit of mechanical sympathy is required for ownership IMO; don't thrash from cold and allow to cool adequately.

This plays a part in some cases, however the 2.5sti lump is a poor piece of engineering from Subaru, the amount of ringland failures is beyond scary , if you plan to push it much over standard then you would budget 3 grand for the likely chance of when it requires rebuilding, sadly post 2006 the engines in imprezas are terrible for modifying or running much more then standard boost, the 2.5wrx is much better (but less stressed as standard)

Its like they have gone backwards , you can pretty much safely run the 2002-2005 2.0sti engine to 450bhp with no issues, WRX to 350bhp

Unsure yet if the new 2015 ones suffer the problem, I think if they do its going to go badly for Subaru.

That forum used to upset me.. Too many traders and 'performance garages' ripping people off..

I'm quite partial to an Impreza but the basic chassis and engine hadn't changed for over 15 years yet this illusion of it being some kind of 'special' car that needs 'special' treatment is always portrayed..

Have you read any of that thread? 56 pages of 2.5 failures

Couldn't agree more, but that only adds to the problems with the 2.5 engine. It shouldn't need 3k oil changes, the 2.0 engine never did - infact I believe the handbook interval is same as my 1.2 Corsa.

Many of the cars in that thread failed before their first ever service. That surely is indicative of a design flaw in the engine rather than poor maintenance? Not every Subaru owner nails it on boost from cold every day either, infact I'd say the community is so paranoid and precious of their cars that they're all guilty of the opposite - sat outside work for 20mins letting their turbo cool down

Christ that thread makes for scary reading.

Are these failures exclusively on the EJ257 engine? When did this engine come into service?

Makes me wonder if even a late Hawkeye is safe?

It started from the day of the first hawks in 2006, was rife during the hatches 09-12 and then it's gone a bit quiet since, mainly as Subaru simply haven't sold anywhere near the numbers they used to do.

It's exclusively the EJ25 in the STI cars.

* Probably worth noting that almost all modified Hawks for sale nowadays have already been forged, and as such are brilliant purchases.

* and the imports all have the 2.0 engine in them, so no problems there either.

I do fancy myself a legitimate Litchfield T-25 at some stage. Although flawed and old, I miss my P1 dearly.

If I don't go that route, I'll probably buy a moderately spec'd Blobeye.
