i need some speakers for the front of my van. i believe they are 10cm in size
ive never really bought car stereo stuff before, so what is a good brand/quality make for the small size they are that will give me some alright sound?
i am fitting 6 times 9s in the back also.

Guessing they're dash mounted if they're 10cm/4"?
Either way, go with something from the usual bunch (JL, Focal, Rainbow, Audison, Hertz) and go with 'full' coaxial unless you fancy cutting holes for 2/3-way drivers.
Edit - Personally i'd try and stay away from 6x9's as they generally sound pants unless boxed; rather go with larger coaxials

what sort of watts will i be looking at as some ive found claim double the others?

All my Hi-Fi is indoors so i'm a bit pig shit ignorant when it come to car stuff, but i've heard good murmurings about the quality of Audiobahn and Infinity stuff.

You might need some sort of speaker adaptor, probably better asking on a VW van forum, but otherwise it usually only requires you to snip off any proprietary speaker connectors and crimp on some spade connectors - so fairly plug 'n' play.
And unless you're wanting to amp the speakers then don't worry about any marketing watt rating guff.
Caraudiodirect has a good selection - http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/speakers/full-range/4-inch-coax-10cm?limit=all.

Depends if you want to fart around cutting holes for the other drivers. Plus, i'm not sure it's worth the effort when your biggest driver is 4"; a decent set of coaxials will be better.
Edit - It's also worth mentioning that the depth and diameter of the driver magnet could be a potential headache; might be worth taking out one of the current drivers and seeing what size the current hole is and space available.
