Currently shopping for a new car with the mrs. She wants a new clio it has been decided. Now just looking at what engine to go for out of the above.
Does a 60 to 70 mile round trip to work and back and short trips at weekends.
Free tax on the derv and £20 on the petrol. Derv is quicker on paper.
DDoesa diesel benfit for those miles?

The dci is always very impressive on fuel. Have never driven a tce one though. If I was buying I would get the dci for sure.

Whilst financially it might not make a huge amount of sense, the actual drive in the derv will be better.
My experience of the small 1.0 turbo engines is they need ragging to get anywhere. Fun, but probably quite annoying on a hefty commute.

Its really hard to call at the moment..
The little 3 cylinder petrol engines are great! But how long will they last is the question as they are quite highly strung!
Also there's the question of re-sale (clearly not an issue if you're getting strapped up for it though): For the last few years diesels have had a better re-sale value but that could all change over the next year or so due to the bad wrap diesels are getting.
If its a lease car go with the petrol (doesn't matter if it blows up) if you're buying it I'd say flip a coin!

Those dCi's actually do mental MPG - I have one for hire in menorca and think I put about €15 in it for a long weekend of knocking around on the island

Its not if we're talking about performance cars, but we're not.. Its a budget, eco, hatchback with 3-cylinders.

Mrs mum has a clip 0.9 turbo. It's actually quite nice to drive although can't comment on fuel as she uses it for short trips constantly. I'm used to a 165bhp Astra and it wasn't that bad to drive. Quite a well specced thing , carbon fibre (look) splitter and skirts , 17s , screen inside with sat nav , panaromic roof etc.

They look great and are well specced. Also lots of room in the back.
Has she looked at the Twingo at all? New one is on 0% deals and they look superb. Rear engined and RWD apparently. Me and the missus are thinking about getting one for her to bazz about in.

Rwd doesn't mean it's able to drift everywhere, so don't get too excited. Supposed to be pretty average to drive.

Agreed, although having had personal experience of a 1.0 focus for a year, I found it a joy to drive. Didn't feel underpowered at all and was far better than the 1.25 in the fiesta.

I'd look at Fiesta's Gav.
Colleague just picked up 14 plate 1.25 Zetec with sub 10k on the clock for £7500 at car supermarket!
He was considering a Clio but for similar age/mileage you're looking £9k+.

I want her to get a fiesta but she wont have one. Mainly as most of our street work at ford and have one
Think we will drive both back to back and go from there. Cant belive the dci can do 80mpg +
Have heard good things about the little boosted petrols mind drive wise. Although is she borrows the works pool car thats a derv 59 plate fiesta and she likes that, says its nippy haha
Ps not leasing buying up front. 10kish budget including trading in her grande punto but that appears to be worth bugger all :-o

Why? common rail diesels are fundamentally more economical than petrol engines by miles.

Driven a 1.0 100ps Focus. Was lush.
Watched an old Top Gear on Tuesday. Cars you could get for £7k on the used market, compared to the Nissan Pixo which is that much brand new.
Get a Merc CL500 and have £3k change

I have the 1.5dci in the Megane, driving like a total spanner, lots of short journeys to the gym and most of my commute (when I'm not sat in traffic) i'm using cruise control everywhere and I get mid 50's. Can easily get more if I actually want to or if I'm doing a long trip.
Clio is smaller, your missus is probably less of a tool than I, minimum mid 60's would be my expectation

My Astra 1.9 CDTi 150 says it should get 50mpg. I can't get over 35mpg

I've got a 0.8 Fiat 500 - it's an OK drive but the power is all turbo. Fortunately it's got some fancy stuff going on so the power comes in low and it revs quite well. Gets nowhere near the claimed mpg though! So, if the Renault is anything like the Fiat then the diesel might be better.
