Fancy a hot hatch for a bit hooning...

Talk to me? Common issues? Do they rot?

They are cheap as chips and i prefer the shape to ph2

They don't rot, shape is nicer than ph2 but the interior is much worse (if that bothers you)

People freak out over the cambelt (every 70k), my local garage did mine and had a good laugh when I said the Internet said its a 'specialist job' . If your buying at the bottom end of the market I wouldn't even bother changing it.

Totally agree, if you can get one for pennies, don't spend loads of money on it.

I got offered one for under a grand the other day, with 80k on the clock, ex dealer demo and owned by a Renault employee from new.

Offered him the corsa in exchange lol

Gearboxes are the only real weak point but they're weak if you spend £600 on a shed or £6000 on a Trophy so I wouldn't worry.

Oh and the exhausts fall off and it's cheaper to buy stainless from a specialist.

Buy one. Do the cambelt and Dephaser. Keep it serviced properly and you will never have to worry.
They take a lot of abuse too. Ph2 is nice IMO

P1 172 are more hard-core looking and what I would go for. I just got offered a 172 exclusive (scarab green l.e ) for a swap for my vRS. If it was 6mth down the line I'd have snapped it up.

I would get a Saxo vts, cheap nowadays. But one with catcam 708s or ph3 cams, around 155bhp and strip it out to around sub 850kgs,

I'd say 172 over a VTS. Just cause a VTS will be rotten in the usual spots, and rear beams need doing far too often. My old 106 GTi had areas beam on it 8 months before I got it and 6 month later the bearings were starting to wear.

Ph2 172 would be my choice for the better interior. Or try find a ph1 with an ally Bonnet. Pretty rare the ally bonnets. As said there fine for rot, front wings are plastic. Can get them supercharged too, my mates old one was 252bhp. Was rather nippy.

I had 3 Saxos for over 5 years lowered 100mm on the back, not one problem with a back axle. Then a pug 206sw standard height and the axle went on it. Lol it's luck pot luck.

I had a Diablo red one, throttle bodies, ph3 cams and full decat stainless. 173bhp. Was silly quick with the power to weight.

My other was a standard Diablo red.

And the other was a rare moonstone blue non sunroof model with a JP4 from a C2 VTS, standard 106 cams. Full exhaust. Gaz coilovers. Brembo brakes. Made 142bhp. Miss that car loads

My old ones.

Diablo red, just lowered, rallye wheels and exhaust. Was pretty rotten tbh. And had 125k

Throttle bodied one. Was pretty rough and had 17 previous owners

And the moonstone one.

Sold that one for £2800 in 2011. Was a 52 plate with 88k.

Find a decent one and get it bought John.
