Her 4 year old Vaio is dead, so needs replacing.
I'm the least computery person ever though so I don't know what we should buy her.
She pretty much uses excel, word, email and the Internet so it doesn't need an amazing ability for games etc.
I reckon we've got about 5-600 budget wise, not bothered about brand but it gets used a lot, so probably not some cheap tesco own brand thing.
Suggestions please?

A Surface Pro would be the only option if you need to use (full blown) Excel; Android or iOS doesn't particularly cater for (proper) office applications.
Robin - Look at Dell; generally pretty solid and reliable and aren't too expensive.
Spec-wise look for something Intel i5/i7 (don't go AMD); 6GB+ RAM; storage - ideally go for a SSD/solid-state drives (for that budget you'd probably get a 128 or 256GB, if you're lucky, SSD), however if you need storage (for music, films etc) then a mechanical drive (1/2TB) is the only real option unless you can up the budget to either allow for a bigger SSD or to go with a laptop that offers dual-bay hard drives (ie - small SSD drive for your OS and programs, then a large mechanical drive for storage) but it'll be well past the £5/600 budget.

Doesn't need to a Pro anymore... Surface 3 would be fine for mainly document and internet use.
If she did want to stick to a traditional laptop, this would probably be all she needed...

Alternatively if you wanted to go all out, this has a great spec

You need a £180 laptop, i3 chip, 4GB RAM and upgrade the hard drive to a 250GB SSD. Total cost, £250. Will be good for a few years.
If you cant get hold of MS Office cheap, get Office 365 on a monthly subscription.

Didn't realise they scrapped Windows RT; good to know though

Hope you mean a manufacture upgrade rather than doing it yourself which would more than likely void the warranty Still, i'm not sure where you'd get a decent branded laptop for £180 with that spec

PC World, Tesco, Ebuyer - all have offers on from time to time.
It's a £180 laptop. If it fails stick the original drive back in and do a warranty claim.
I had a motherboard fail on a SONY laptop. PC World sent off the laptop to be repaired but they could not get a board. I received a full refund and SSD back from SONY.

HP ProBook on HUKD for £299 (http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/hp-probook-450-g2-299-97-saveonlaptops-2362805) and the spec doesn't seem too bad.
Edit - Just spotted this on HUKD/PcWorld (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-15-ak085na-15-6-laptop-white-10139942-pdt.html?awc=1598_1451346293_d05f9fee84e0f6fa8de06ef70dbdb2a5&srcid=369&xtor=AL-11&cmpid=aff~HotUKDeals~Communities%20%26%20UGC&istCompanyId=9a35962d-802d-4e67-9721-0a3328ca1f02&istItemId=qqpxmxaa&istBid=t#srcid=11026).
