If I drive carefully I can get 60+ from my 2013 Clio 1.5 Dci Dynamique MediaNav. Nice car too.
I average around 58mpg normally
If my missus drives it she can get 70mpg.

My a3 will do 40mpg quite easily. Had it up to 63mpg once, was a mental day that, went past a merc sl doing 45mpg and beat him up to 55mpg then went on to hit the 63mpg.

Will you drive this in the winter with mud and rain or only when it is sunny?

What kind of roads do you mostly drive on? If motorways, a 1.0 fiesta will do 50mpg no problem. Just make sure it has 6 gears as they rev a little high in 5th at 70mph.
New Eu6 1.5 engines we're pushing out are good for 70+mpg real world.

If you're not bothered about the engine size my 1.0 Ibiza Vista averages about 50MPG.
Cheap road tax too.

My old 1.9tdi golf would do 55mpg all day long. 65 on a long journey sat at 70. Mk5 so cheap as nowadays.

Diesel's I have had and with their usual and best mpg:
Vectra B 2.0 DI : 45mpg usual, 50mpg on a run.
Passat 1.9 TDI 110bhp: 50mpg anywhere.
Corsa 1.5D: 55mpg around town, best ever was 80mpg. Sooo slow though.
Fabia Vrs: 55mpg around town, 65mpg on a run. Immense car, expensive to fix.
307 1.6HDI 90: 55mpg usual running. Not taking it on a long run yet. Comfy drive though.
Depends if you want a new car or a cheap runaround. I paid £800 for my 307 with 86,000 miles on and full history.
I think the low engine diesel polos are 3cyls - not the best.

I had a 1.3 cdti Corsa D that did a genuine 60mpg on a regular a road commute, fairly stop/start and up and down hills too.
Currently on a 1.6d mk7 Golf that shows an indicated 55mpg generally, although I'm now on a mainly motorway 70mile round trip. Both of these were on company fuel too so not deliberately trying to be economical.
BMW 120d gets mid-high 40 indicated but that does a lot more town driving, don't think it'd be far off the golf on same commute which considering its 185 v 105 bhp is pretty decent too.
I'd consider whether it was worth sacrificing a few mpg for a better car though, especially with the price of fuel predicted to be pretty stable for a while, how much is say 5mpg more gonna save you over the year?

We have a 206 1.4 HDi.
Before i changed jobs, i'd do 400 miles a week, and would get 2 weeks of going to work and back from a tank. Best we had was 820 miles from 1 tank.
Bare in mind, i was leaving at 5am so the roads were pretty quiet, and leaving around the start of rush hour so was getting busy. No motorway driving, mainly all national speed limit roads, didnt use it on weekends or really around town.
