Saw a guy doing it once in a curry house, while reading a book, he seemed to be quite content.

What about out of a work situation?
Also, what about the cinema? Seems less odd as it's dark and nobody talks but no-one seems to go alone

Always found the alone at cinema thing strange.
Like it's been said, you don't go there to talk anyway, but you're called weird if you go alone.
I've never been alone

I have done while away with work alone... i didnt like it, although i hate eating in a mcdonalds or something alone too...
Meals are a social thing i think, far more fun whilst chatting..
I have never been to the cinema alone tbh, doubt i would either. Could think of nothing worse than sitting with 2 groups of strangers either side watching a film... again its a social thing too, bit food and a film...

Just don't sit with others :/
Cinemas are very rarely that packed, unless it's a huge film released that day

my best mates bro has to eat out on his when hes on trips away with work
one night a british newly wed couple came into the restaurant he was in with no reservation whilst on their honeymoon, waitress asked if he wouldnt mind sharing his table (was a big table just for 1 person), he agreed and thought "fuck it i'll just read my book"....
ended up having to watch them make kiss faces all night, listen to them explain their life story and take pictures for them at the table together
his sum up "never again will i share my table...worst decision i ever made"

Only one time I can think of, going out for drinks after work, got there a bit early so ordered some food. Again, didn't bother me but probably because I'm used to it with work.

I'd never do it out of a work situation. Even with McDonald's I'd sit in the car

Yes, because I don't care what anyone feels isn't socially awkward or wrong.
I enjoy my own company and went to Nurburgring on my own and had a fantastic time
