Not bad torque wise, i wouldnt want one, i'd prefer the 1.2Sxi. Economy is quite good, but its only worth getting one if you do over 30k per year, otherwise the extra cost of the car isn't worth it

Cos it sounds and smells better, and revs above 5000Rpm, also its lighter and can take more stick round the bends

the 1.2 is very noisey on the motorway, due to the short gearing. i wouldnt know about the 1.7

If theres 1 thing i cant stand abt diesel drivers its the fact they drive round in the wrong gear chuckin out black smoke. wankers.

Im loving my DTi - I haven't had any regrets whatsoever.
Modern diesel's arnt really that noisey. The only time I think it sounds noisey is when I start it on the driveway when the engine is cold and it all echos back against the house.
& The noise isn't much of an issue when your driving. I was cruising along steadilly at 50 the other day listening to the radio and thought hang on, I cant hear the engine !, so I had to turn the radio right down to hear it. - But I didn't have the radio that loud at all - even with the radio on softly you can not really hear the engine.
I've had it 5 months, and it still surprises me. The other day I was waiting at this narrowed speed hump where the oncoming traffic had priority. Then the road was clear, I pulled away, and I dont know what I did differently but I shot forwards like a catapult, and had to harshly brake for the ramp just infront
3rd gear is very nice too.
And I believe it has a different suspension set up to the petrol , I heard somewhere.
And yep - @ 70 it cruises along nicely. 60 is nicer, bit quieter, but still 70 is nice. And still a reasonable amount of acceleration @ 70. - - This is only my 2nd car, and I havent really driven much else - so me saying that could be biased.
Plus I dont know why people still say Diesels are noisey, smelly, smokey and burn oil 'cos modern ones dont !
Yeh, fair enough its noisier than a petrol, but they don't smell, and neither do they pump out loads of smoke. - Ive never seen anything come out of the back of mine - t'is very clean.
Also, one last thing (Im bored incase u can't tell) - it hasn't really used much oil yet. I've only done about 2800 miles but the oil level is still above 1/2 on the stick.
Plus you can hear the turbo quite loudly, which I love

the sxi dti has got a better suspention setup and brakes as standard. so that idea went out the window, lol.
as for smells, see mikeboys post.
the dti is quicker than the 1.2, maybe similar 0-60, but to be honest you want in gear torque for normal driving.
much more economical too.

thats because you probably had revs on the car so the turbo was already running. can proper launch them if you put some revs on them first, like 2500 rpm and let the clutch up slowly, try it, great for pulling onto roundabouts. dont let it up too quick though or the wheels loose grip.
