There probly be no sound at all or just some farting and smoke pouring out the HU.
remember the internal amp only controls the output for the high level outputs(standard speaker wires), not the RCA outputs which you connect to the amp...
which are you using??? are you sure the HU gone tits up??

my hand unit is buggered all the buttons do different things from which they should but yesterday it was as though all of my speakers blew all at once just extremly distorted sound now

Not good...
would try another HU to make sure 100% ? borrow your mates...
but it looks like it just had enough... don't bother trying to get it fixed, unless you have it on warrenty still... will cost to much $$ dollar $$

its an oldish one anyway got it for free. lookslike a new head unit then. hope i dont have to replace all ma speakers just paid £300 for em

when my sony one did it it sounded all crackly then the headunit got very hot. thats when i decided it might be a good idea to turn it off and bin it, lol.
