A few of my mates have bought cars from auctions, real cheap and they're good cars.
Is it a good idea, cos i'm after a new car. I was told to look out for the different catergories, i.e. some are old hire cars etc..
Any info welcome, or experiences of buying from auctions.

yeah that's why i'm debating whether to go. cos i don't know that much and if i see a car that looks nice i'll be tempted to buy it. I've done it before and I lost too much money.

Hire cars tend to have been given death for most of their life. I'd be very wary.
Find a finance repossession as 'one owner' means one caring owner not one owner who let 100 loons have a go.

i spose it dpends on what car ur after..i mean a Renault 5 GT may not be the best idea to get from an auction but a standard 1.0 Corsa may be cos most likely owned by sum1 old!

Ex fleet/lease cars can be good buys, you know that they`ve been serviced properly. You could get a decent vectra, mondeo or 406 or similar at bargain prices.

I've been to a fair few car auctions, and I found in general the sub £1000 cars would go for more than they might fetch privately. This is because people like you go along, to buy ONE car, and more often it is women who just want a nice car and will pay more than its worth, and push the prices up.
The good deals come with the ex company cars, where you can pick up a mint car that has been regularly serviced, with slightly high mileage (sometimes very high), for not alot of money.
Take along a copy of parkers and glasses guide.
*if* you are concerened that you might buy a shagged car, alot of auction rooms have sections where the car is guarunteed agains mechanical fault for 28 days. These cars do tend to go for a bit more though.
Just go along without the intention of buying the first time, get a feel for it, and see what goes on. Try to go to more than one too, at different venues - some are shite and some are well good.

a lot of car dealers nick the history or put it under the seat so that no one else knows about it. And remeber, you have the indemnity to pay, usually about £70
