when i'm selecting the edges of the object, can i zoom in real close to get right on the edge of the object and then zoom down pressing any keys, cos if i zoom in and then try to scroll down it fecks up what i'm selecting?

Select it roughly, touch it up with an eraser tool or similar to soften edges and get a decent selection.
Select it all again and skew it on a new layer so it fits the original wheel orientation.
