Hey all
Thinking of selling my gsi to go for the standard new 3 door model. Now seeing as the timing belts of the SB models just luuurve to blow up in usually spectacular fashion, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if this situation has been improved on with the new models?? Has anyone done enough km's to find out? Is it even still a rubber belt... holden are vary vague on their website...

In aus i think you only get the 1.4 and 1.8 engines? There shouldn't be any problems if its maintained.
In the UK the 1.0 and 1.2 are chain driven

as long as its under warranty it dont matter
failing that if youre worried get a competition type one

You can get competition belts for corsas???! Is that rather expensive to fit tho??
What I'm more interested in knowing is have Opel/holden/whoever actually done anything to fix a total design flaw... prob is if you go into any holden dealer and ask them such a hard hitting question, they'll just shrug [more so cos I'm a girl ] but cos they don't know anything unless it relates to a commodore or monaro!!

The ubiquitous toothed rubber belt WAS hailed as a vast improvement in noise reduction, reliability, etc when introduced. Funny how the chain has made a comeback!
The rubber belts should last at least 60 000 km and if you are religious in changing them there should be no issues.
I am not sure what Opel could "stuff up" in the design of the belt drive to cause random failures. If you know of anything please enlighten us.
I've only done 30K so far, so no help yet.

60 000 km id change it in half that
30 000 km at least "just to be safe"
as my car aint under a warrenty n-e more
and i cant afford to be buying new engines

mine went after 2.5 years, 20000kms and it was fitted by a holden dealer... and I don't thrash the car either. At least they could design the thing so that if is it breaks the whole engine doesn't get all mangled - there are other cars out there like that??
