Hi lads, as yet my '99 1.4 16v sport is unmodified athough one of my mates has the 1.6 16v with exhaust and filter and sounds amazing (a sort of a resonating induction roar similar to an impreza turbo) so i wondered if i done the same mods will my motor sound the same, cos i know the two engines are almost identical apart from their capacity???
i'm sure you all know the sound im on about
ive also heard a sport with induction kit only, and it also made the distinctive note but less loud.
any comments appreciated

drill standard airbox and buy a decent panel filter, better performance than induction for half the price.

But a bit pikey
Go for a PiperX or BFO (made by piper cross bt its HUGE)
Both sport ecotech models make the cooby gurgling sound allthough not as nice, but still sounds yummy heres my BFo cone:

My GSi has the earlier engine in it, with the plastic intake manifold. It sounds gorgous when you boot it, with just a dilled airbox and k&n panel. It's seriously loud when it gets going, but reasonably subtle with normal driving. It's way louder than my bros astra sri with induction kit

Jambo, its not pikey at all. I take offence to that since im trying to sort out my airbox at the moment. It just so happens that a drilled airbox with performance panel filter done correctly will get more power gains than some shite induction kit. Take mac for example, with his spec, he could be hitting over 120bhp with a properly drilled airbox.

You answered your own question there.
The Scooby type of growl you here is down to the induction manifold and throttle body design. The C14SE on my Astra (1.4 8v MPi 82bhp engine, as used in the Nova and Corsa SRi), makes the same kind of noise, but not as loud as the XE equivalent engine.
However, you won't get the same kind of noise from the 1.0 12v/1.2 8v/1.2 16v/1.4 8v SPi engines as they have a crap manifold/TB design for emissions purposes and such like.

yes sounds a bit pikey but you wont suffer from warm air, so no power loss, i'd take the restricting cone out of the air filter housing aswell oh and it dont drink as much fuel as a induction kit = good for fuel prices today
