Can anyone tell me of a quality digital camera that has variable shutter speeds to capture fast moving objects?

Anything with an action or sports setting, shutter priority, or a full manual mode.
Problems that you'll find are that cheaper digi cams aren't as responsive and there's a delay between pressing the shutter and taking the pic. Plus they also take longer to focus and if you're not fully manual, take longer to choose an exposure.
Then there's also the issue that you need loads of light to photograph things that are moving quickly.

You will have to get very manual with the camera to give you good results.

LOL i went to ford fair at silverstone yest, got more pics of the track than cars cos bloody camera was too slow

I used to have a Fuji 4900 - excellent camera for the cash - exposure to manual, choose a shutter, guess an aperture, manually focus wherever I wanted to place the car, follow the car and snap as it reached my focus point. Good result, but it's bloody hard work!!

Yeah the trick with focussing that Fuji was basically to know where you had set it and snap just before the car entered it. Not an exact science by any means but could yeild good results with that cam.

That was wot i have been told about mine, well similar anyway, apparently you should focus on something approx same distance away then move camera on to subject and take pic.

ian you have a D30 now thats a nice camera what lenses do you have???
with that camera the first place i would be is on to of the anglican on a day like this the best views and picturess

Dave - I've got a 20-35 for short stuff, a 28-135 that I never use and a 70-200 2.8 IS for the motorsport stuff.

i love the view from up there i think i will go tommorow
i would love to get a SLR but i just dont think i would use it enuf to make it worth it as i just take day out for pics but i would love the ability to change lenses but the s602 dose me fine for now

fuji fine pics A602 has some modes but unless your going for a proper digital SLR your not going to get the same sort of functions. cannon brought out the D10 not so long ago as a replacement for the D60. costs 1300 for the body only

Most of the Fuji range above £400 has variable shutter speeds and a fast enough processor to write to the card.
CompactFlash cameras use the processor in the CF media, so can be slower when writing, but generally faster when reading from the card.
I used a few and decided on Fuji.

i got the new sony cybershot v1 last week for £450
has nightshot/framing, shutter speeds etc
had a go las night takin pic of forth rail bridge again il post later when iv uploaded it
