you may have whats known as a DAX line, sometime when phone lines are being put in, rather than give each house on the road/coldiesak its own line they take one line and split it 3 ways , so you get a really poor telephone line and if you have a DAX line you need it taken out and a new line put in but thats mega £££

have they come and checked the line at your end, or just done it remotely? ive heard quite a few stories of BT saying it wont work, and then it actually working. Try taking out all the other things plugged into your phone line and get them to do the test again too if they will.

you also have to remember that its copper cable and was never designed to have data transfered along it , and over the years copper lines wear etc and this also causes issues.

each house has a REN limit, this is usually 2.5 around my area if you look on the bottom of your fone you will see its REN rating, most fones are 1.5 or 1 so most houses can have two fones, any more than this and they use up too much power and the signal quality becomes poor. ask bt too add some REN to your house to like 4 and you should get a decent connection.

Your more than probably on a line sharing device. I had this problem and they wouldnt serve me broadband.

All i did was complain and complain about noise on the line/clicking/cutting off and within a month they put me onto a direct exchange line (DEL) and on new equipment at the exchange which the engineer showed me.

Yes Drew we all understand that he is saying that he ordered his broadband and BT has refused to provide the service on the requested activation date due to line compatability
