Somewhere west of Paris, in a town that should be twinned with Staines, I'm accosted by France's answer to Ali G. He's got the shades, the goatee, the shell suit and even the right wheels. He's just parked up in a lowered, body-kitted, sub-whoofer-toting Saxo VTR.

And he's wildly over-excited at the sight of this C2 VTR, the car that's tasked with replacing his chosen ride. He struts around the exterior, grimacing at the high roofline and strangely shaped side windows, before grinning at the flared wheel arches, the beefed-up sills, the dropped suspension and the sizeable standard 16-in alloys. I think he likes it. Potentially, he won't be alone. Over the past five years, more than 50,000 Saxo VTRs and VTSs have found homes in the UK alone - more than twice as many as any other hot hatch - largely thanks to its combination of speed, presence, insurability and affordability.

Citroen says the Saxo's 'wicked looking' replacement is 'set to burst onto the urban scene with its street cool looks.' Sounds like your your dad talking, but at least we'll have the VTR right from launch (a quicker VTS will likely follow).

Visually, the VTR is chunkily purposeful, if a bit tall. Inside, the luridly coloured seats and translucent gearknob look like they're straight out of a Demon Tweeks catalogue. The rear seats are equally loud and can slide forwards, recline or fold fully out of the way. The pimply dash, meanwhile, has the solidity of egg boxes and is borrowed from the five-door hatch C3 and Pluriel, which also share underpinnings with the C2. Power is provided by a 1.6-litre 16-valve engine serving up 110bhp - 10bhp more than the last-of-the-line Saxo VTR. On the other hand, the C2 VTR is laden with such equipment as four airbags, an alarm and cruise control and so weighs in at 1,055kg - 135kg more than the Saxo.

With our Gallic Ali G now making an indecipherable comment about the VTR's single, small, chromed exhaust pipe, a shot of acceleration is needed to save face. Trying not to run over his Air Jordans, I put my foot down. Throttle response is sharp, and the car squeals forwards with greater eagerness than its 0-62 time of 10.9secs suggests. A higher gear ratio is called for, requiring a lift of the throttle and a flick of my right hand.

Where the Saxo VTR had a five-speed manual gearbox, the C2 VTR can only be had with a five-speed SensoDrive sequential transmission, complete with a robotised clutch and steering column-mounted paddle shifters. The gear ratios are lower than in the equivalent C3, and manual shifts are far smoother than on earlier SensoDrive systems. Full manual control is retained, except when pulling to a stop, at which point the transmission drops into first. There's a jerky auto mode too, which is often too slow to respond.

Keeping it in manual mode, the gearchanges snap home and the engine pulls hard through the rev range. But as I reach fifth, the volume increases to a point where I find myself reaching for an extra ratio - which isn't there.

A series of curves gives the crisp, standard-ABS brakes a chance to intervene. The electrically-assisted power steering varies from very light to light with speed, but the C2 stays well balanced and grips hard with less of the Saxo's edginess. It's as taut, firm and fun as it needs to be. VTR aside, there's a selection of more sensible C2s also incoming, including a petrol 1.4-litre with 75bhp and the same SensoDrive 'box, plus a diesel 1.4 HDi with 70bhp and a manual 'box. The most popular version is expected to be the basic £6,995 1.1-litre with 61bhp.

The C2 VTR will set you back a modest £10,995, including a year's free insurance (it's in group 6). That might leave enough cash for a set of arch-grinding alloys, a loud exhaust and possibly even some 'phat' neon lights to mount beneath your front spoiler.
