I went to open one of the folders on my 2nd HDD, and it said it couldnt cos one or more of the folders were corrupted. Restarted my comptuer cos that normally helps shit like that, but now it is saying "The disk in drive F: is not formatted, do you want to format it now?". I cant even browse the folders on it! I will be gutted if its broken cos i have 140GB of media on it!

sounds like catastrophic failure. Is the HDD old? maybe you can use your primary boot drive to run a recovery program to get back as much as possible.

Disk management is recognising it as a 180GB disk (which is right) but saying its 100% free. I will be gutted if its fucked up, cos i will have lost 110 films, all the southparks ever made, almost all the friends episodes, 2 series of simpsons and porn

tiem to get some recovery programs mate Wacking a magnet near the drive wont wipe the whole lot, it will just corrupt it. So best bet mate is to run a scandisk on it and see what happens Also get a program called "PC Inspector File Recovery" from www.convar.de . Does the job pretty well mate, although ive never used it on a HD that isnt be reconised/corrupt but it might work mate

what ever you do mate, dont defrag the drive nor try and remount it, that will usually screw it

that program you suggested crashed every time it went to scan my 2nd HDD. Downloaded another one which isnt free, and that seems to have foiund the files, but im not paying to get it back. Will have to sort it out after work, but if anyone knows any good, free programs to help then i will be very grateful!

OK, just read the whole post. I had probs with one of my 8.4s a few yrs back. It just said there was nothing on the drive and i couldn't fdisk of format it. I read somewhere to fdisk the master boot record which i did and that drive is still running 6 years down the line 24/7 on one of my servers to do this you need to bunk it in as a master so that it is your c drive and then with a 98 boot disk boot the system up and type: fdisk/mbr

Worked for me anyways. Give it a try. U can keep all your data too as it doesn't kill it!

I did manage to set a 10 gig on fire last year though Dunno how, it just went up

I had an old 40Gb drive go pop (literally - blistered scorch mark where a chip on it had exploded, also scorching the case of the drive below it), three weeks before the three-year-warranty expired.

Fair play to Maxtor, they replaced it with a new 60Gb with no argument!
