took a look with a m8 today and found the drivers side engine mount had lost all of the bolts going into the block, the exhaust manifold was holding that side up by resting on the mount.
this explain the knocking noise on startup and vibration, worryingly the garage i use diagnosed it as the exhaust rubber were out of position. .
so gonna locktite the buggers back in tomorrow, anyone else had this kind of problem?

oi corsafreak, i would go back to the garage and go bloody mental!!
imagine that you went over a big pothole and it dislodged the exhaust manifold away from the mount, you might not have been able to have made up this thread!
i would seriously go round there and complain big time.
glad you found the problem tho, could have been really expensive to fix whilst being bloody dangerous, while you were chuffin lucky

as soon as i heard the strange noise it's hardly been on the road. fixed now, all bolts locktite'd in with industrial strength gunk.
i can't really complain to the garage as they only mot'd the car the bolts were probably on the way out when i took the car to them.
2 were missing one was still in but loose. sorted now though

quite common for that frount mount to come undone where it fastens to the block!
