Hey, i recently had a bit of smoke come from my bonnet when i started it, so i immediatly switched it off and had a look one of the wires was burning, so i thought it must be shorting, i take it its an earth wire, it was vrown before it got burnt, where does it go to! since it burnt out my starter motor dosnt earth properly and i have a jump lead from the gear box to battery!, it also dosnt seem to keep its charge/charge it so i take it its the earth lead for the starter motor, but anything else? i think it could be shorting on somehting else!
engine is a 1.4 16v x14xe

Starter motor earth is a lot thicker than that wire.

My assumption would be that your starter motor earth (the real one) is not giving a good earth so your motor is earthing through the loom which of course can't take that current and got hot.

Clean and refit all the thicker stuff and that should sort it after you have replaced the scorched bit.

The heat is caused by current through the thin wire, not by a short.

Not a clue, probably not far judging by the thickness of it.
